2026-09-28 01:00:11

Model Overview

The Jaecoo 8 is positioned as a flagship plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV, highlighting luxury, advanced technology, and generous space, targeted at larger families globally seeking a premium driving experience. The SUV comes standard with a seven-seater layout, alongside an optional six-seater "Executive Edition". In terms of dimensions, it measures 4.82 metres long, 1.93 metres wide, and 1.7 metres tall, with a wheelbase of 2.82 metres. Its WLTP pure electric range is rated at 133 km, while total cruising range on a full tank and full charge reaches up to 1,200–1,300 km. The 2026 global export model starts at approximately £45,000, directly rivalling the likes of the Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, Peugeot 5008, and Skoda Kodiaq iV.

Design Language

Drawing styling inspiration from the Tiggo 9, the Jaecoo 8 combines an upscale aesthetic with the brand’s rugged family DNA. Up front, a prominent waterfall-style chrome grille delivers commanding road presence, flanked by wing-shaped LED headlights, while a "floating roof" design with sleek lines gives the SUV an upright, imposing stance.

Inside, the cabin carries over the wrap-around cockpit architecture seen on the Tiggo 9. A dual-tone interior theme is paired with piano black trims and wood-grain inserts for a refined, premium finish. The cockpit features a dual-screen setup comprising a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, powered by an automotive-grade Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Higher-spec variants add a Head-Up Display (HUD), four-zone automatic climate control, and a 14-speaker SONY premium sound system.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the bonnet, the Jaecoo 8 is powered by JAECOO’s proprietary "Super Hybrid System - Plug-in" setup, pairing a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with dual permanent magnet synchronous electric motors (front and rear). The system delivers a combined maximum output of 315 kW (approximately 428 PS) and a peak torque of 580 Nm, mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission. Power is sent through an intelligent electric all-wheel drive (AWD) system, propelling the SUV from 0 to 96 km/h in just 5.5 seconds. Thanks to its high-capacity battery pack, it achieves a WLTP pure electric range of 133 km, with a total combined cruising range of 1,200–1,300 km. It requires RON 92 petrol or above, returning a fuel consumption of 6.8 L/100 km (WLTP) in charge-sustaining mode. DC fast charging supports up to 40 kW, taking just 20 minutes to replenish the battery from 30% to 80%.

Chassis & Handling

Built on Chery’s high-end architecture, the chassis features all-round independent suspension with front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link setup. Higher-spec variants are equipped with a Continuous Damping Control (CDC) electromagnetic suspension system that monitors road conditions in real time and adjusts damping within milliseconds, striking an optimal balance between on-road ride comfort and chassis support during light off-roading. The AWD system incorporates dual rear-axle clutches capable of independent torque distribution between the rear wheels, enhancing cornering tracking and traction recovery. With an approach angle of 19°, a departure angle of 22°, and a standard wading depth of 450 mm (up to 600 mm on select variants), the vehicle is well-equipped for light off-road excursions. Steering is managed by an electric power steering (EPS) system, complemented by ventilated disc brakes all round, with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) and Auto Hold fitted as standard.

Cabin & Features

Prioritising both high technology and luxury, the cabin offers a versatile "5+2" or "4+2" seating layout. The driver's seat features 8-way power adjustment with ventilation, heating, and massage functions, while the front passenger is treated to a Queen Co-pilot Seat (featuring an ottoman leg rest and massage function). The second-row seats are equipped with seat heating and electric backrest adjustment. The 50:50 split-folding third-row seats fold flat to create a virtually seamless boot floor. Premium eco-friendly synthetic leather upholstery is used extensively throughout the cabin to elevate tactile appeal. The infotainment unit supports 5G connectivity, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an intelligent voice assistant. Creature comforts include three-zone automatic climate control, an Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) system, 50W wireless fast charging, and a built-in fragrance system.

Safety & Advanced Driver Assistance

Engineered around an "Ultra Off-Road Safety" philosophy, over 85% of the vehicle’s critical structure is constructed from ultra-high-strength thermoformed steel, significantly boosting body rigidity and crashworthiness. The SUV has achieved a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. A total of 10 airbags come standard across the range, including dual front airbags, front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags spanning front to rear, and knee airbags for both driver and front passenger, ensuring comprehensive protection across all three rows.

In terms of active safety, the Jaecoo 8 is equipped with 19 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) covering daily urban commutes and long-distance cruising, achieving Level 2+ semi-autonomous driving capability. Key features include full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and a 360° surround-view camera system with transparent chassis display.

Market Performance & Reception

As JAECOO’s flagship model, the J8 has demonstrated strong market momentum globally. In the Russian market, J8 sales in the first quarter of 2025 reached 1,439 units, contributing to the brand's overall local growth of 25.3%. In Southeast Asia, JAECOO brand sales in Indonesia reached 3,005 units in February 2026, climbing to seventh place overall in the market. In the Middle East, a major flagship launch event was held in the UAE in early 2026.

Motoring media have broadly praised the vehicle as a formidable "game-changer" in the luxury SUV segment, offering levels of equipment and performance that punch well above its starting price of around £45,000. However, some reviews noted that the CDC suspension could be further refined to filter out rapid, continuous road undulations, and the steering feel is on the lighter side with muted feedback. On the practical side, the packaging accommodates a full-size spare tyre beneath the boot floor even with the third-row seats folded flat, providing added peace of mind for long road trips.

In terms of product significance, the Jaecoo 8 represents the pinnacle of Chery Group’s premiumisation and globalisation drive. Combining a super hybrid powertrain, five-star safety credentials, and segment-transcending equipment, it strategically targets the RM300,000 to RM500,000 premium SUV segment, showcasing the technological prowess of China's automotive industry on the global stage under the banner of "democratisation of luxury".
